Have You Ever Imagine The Feeling Of Being An Outsider

Categories: The Metamorphosis

Have you ever seeing an outsider before? Outsiders can be a person that thinks themselves not as good as others. It can also be a person that have completely different behavior than others. In today’s society, outsiders usually got treated either mercifulness or spitefulness ways. Did they always get treat mercifulness? Of course not. They usually met cruel people that both do not understand them or do not want to even try to deeply understand them. They usually get pushed aside as unworthy to be with them.

Being an outsider can also be another negative experience because of rejection and unequal judgment.

Being an outsider will be a negative experience when the outsider gets pushed away or gets rejected by others, especially those they care about. In the novel, The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, the main character named Gregor Samsa wakes up and finds out that he had transferred into a bug.At first, Gregor refuses to believe this body to the remains of his dreams.

After he is found by his family and his boss he accepted the truth of transferring into a bug. When Gregor leaves his room he got fired by his boss and his father,' His father clenched his fist with a hostile expression as if he wished to push Gregor back into his room...' As you can see Gregor's father's reaction, he showed rejection after he sees Gregor’s new body. This shows the negative experience being an outsider can have, outsiders, get emotionally or physically rejected by others.

Just like an article that had talked “It would be bad enough if ostracism just reduced feelings of belonging, but being rejected can reduce self-esteem, a sense of control, and a sense of having a meaningful existence...”. In the story, even though transforming to an insect wasn’t what Gregor want, but his father still chose to have a distance between him and Gregor. Getting rejected by others can make anyone feel bad and uncomfortable because this will make them think they are bad because they didn't like or do the things that others like to do.

Being an outsider will usually see himself as not as good as others. Seeing other's is better than their own, they will usually make the individual think he or she is not worthy to talk to those rich people or even think he or she will never be as good as them. For example, when you go to school and you see another student that is richer than you and with better grades. This will make you start thinking about why am I not born in a higher class family or why his grades are better than mine because people usually wanted to compare themselves to others. An anonymous user says “In my experience, being an outsider is like being kind of invisible. You walk amongst people and you see people, but you never feel that they see you. And when you do something to make them see you they just don't seem to understand”(what does it mean to be an outsider?). By this thought, it will casually break your confidence, and slowly make yourself think that you can never get better or no matter how hard you try, you can never get as good as them because you are just not as good as them.

Even though being an outsider is a negative experience, but when other people accepted you, it can still be a positive experience. In the article of The Benefits of Being An Outsider, by Christina Luconi, she talked about the benefits of being an outsider. She uses what she learned about from observing from her daughter’s navigate adolescence. She mentions that “Being an “outsider” provides you with a perspective others don’t have...”. Though some might consider being an outsider is a positive experience, this is an incorrect thought people can have because when the young outsiders need to get trusted by others the most or even the time they wanted to talk to others the most, society can block them off and make them feel unwelcome.
