Gautam Singhania was born in an industrialist family, to Vijaypath Singhani and Ashabai Singhania. A Commerce graduate of the University of Mumbai, Gautam Singhania is married to Nawaz Modi Singhania. The couple has a daughter named Niharika (born December 2005). He has suffered from vitiligo (loss of skin pigmentation) since a young age. It's progression accelerated when he was in his early 30s, as a side effect of medication.
The chairman and managing director of one of the world’s largest textile manufacturing conglomerate “Raymond group”, Gautam Singhania perfectly epitomizes his company’s tagline “The complete man”, as he is one of the iconic Indian entrepreneurs.
Mr. Gautam Singhania joined the J. K. Group of Companies (Western Zone) in the year 1986. He was appointed the Wholetime Director on the Board of Raymond Ltd. in 1990 and was elevated to the position of Managing Director in mid-1999, in charge of all companies and subsidiaries of the Raymond Group in India and abroad Mr. Gautam Hari Singhania took over the reins of the Company as Chairman and Managing Director in September 2000.
Since then, he has steered the destiny of Raymond Limited with a single-minded focus of making it the best brand in India.
He has been responsible for the strategic decision of the restructuring of the Group, initiating the divestment of the Synthetics, Steel and Cement Divisions.
Post divestment, the Group has consolidated its position with a better bottom line and more focused and market-oriented approach. The talented businessman applied his industry analytical skills to the inherited business to restructure the group.
He sold the company’s non-core businesses and shifted the focus to fabrics, apparel brands, men's toiletries and prophylactics.
With a drive for creating new Brands, Mr.
Singhania has taken active interest in the launch of new services and products. He was instrumental in the successful launch of the brand ‘KamaSutra’ in 1991 under a joint venture with J. K. Ansell. In 1996, he launched a new division called ‘Million Air’, providing quality air-taxi charter services. It was under his leadership that the fashion casual wear brand ‘Parx’ and premium men’s wear brand ‘Manzoni’ were launched in the year 1999 and 2000 respectively.
In 2001, Mr. Gautam Hari Singhania introduced the concept of corporatisation of designer wear in India. He was also instrumental in Raymond’s acquisition of ColorPlus, a leading menswear brand. Today, the Raymond group is vertically and horizontally integrated to provide customers total textile solutions. Few companies globally have such a diverse product range of nearly 20,000 varieties of worsted suiting to cater to customers across age groups, occasions and styles with over 60% market share in India.
