Maintaining Romantic Relationships
Have you ever experienced butterflies in your belly? Or that first glance at someone and you feel instantly aroused? What about that feeling of comfort and joy every time you’re in each other’s presence? These common pleasures are controlled by the connection between the two people, known as chemistry. Understanding the chemistry amongst a relationship is important to keep the relationship flowing. In life, relationships rarely last because most people get bored while dating. I asked fifty people between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one why their past relationships did not last. One teen stated, “keep the same energy you had to create the relationship, throughout the relationship, and it’ll last forever.” Which is essential in my case as well. Keeping the spice in a relationship and never letting your love go unshown will carry a relationship over from months to years.
Many people from ages sixteen to twenty-one have been in approximately two to three relationships. If you’re lucky then maybe you’ve only been committed to one person, your high school sweetheart I assume. In my case, I’m eighteen years of age and I’ve been in three relationships since I was twelve. I know that seems very young, but my mom was not aware of my relationship until I was fifteen. My first boyfriend was killed when I was seventeen years old. After that horrific experience, I rushed into two subsequent relationships. My experience in relationships has always gone downhill. Therefore, my perspective on love is inadequate. I’ve only experienced true love one time and it was forced to a end. Consequently, I began to look for love in all the wrong places, which led me to become unaware of my worth.
Importance of Loving Yourself
A person’s love for themselves shall be greater than any love they’ve ever experienced or even provided. One has to love and accept themselves before they can be loved or love anyone else. “Love yourself because once you accept who you are, you can focus your energy on other matters and people in your life (Hali T).” When a person loves and appreciates themselves they’re likely to stress less frequently, have better mental health, and they tend to handle misfortune in a better way. Although many people are truly unaware of how to love themselves. First, one should always practice positive psychology. Positive psychology consist of high self-esteem, recognizing strengths, and maximizing one’s full potential. Admiring oneself is necessary but becoming obsessed with oneself will limit one’s focus on other matters and important people in their lives. Boost self-esteem to a certain extent, nevertheless be attentive of one’s feelings as well.
Relationship with Parents
Besides relationships and vainglory, parents exhibit a different type of love for their children. Over time many people lose love within a relationship; but the love a parent has for a child never changes. Parents show the desire to protect, teach, and provide for their children no matter the circumstance. A parent’s’ protection may go to extreme measures, along with their desire to teach their child right from wrong. Parental love is primary, unconditional, and very unlimited, which gives them the urge to go that extra mile.
I believe parents work for their children in a variety of ways as well. Parents rarely complain about the hard work and labor they exhibit for their children. I honestly believe some parents succumb to these unrelenting demands in the name of love. Other parents are able to take things one day at a time and encourage their children to go on another day. This type of love is truly everlasting. My mom is the perfect example of this type of love. We’ve been through hell and back with each other! Unfortunately, the difficult times we have experienced together have forced me to leave the comfort of my home. However, I know my mom will never give up on me and I doubt she ever will.
