A galaxy is a massive, gravitationally bound system of stars, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter. It can be spherical or disk-shaped, and can contain billions of stars, organized into various shapes, such as spiral arms or elliptical regions. Galaxies vary greatly in size and shape, and are typically classified based on their structure, star formation activity, and other features. Our own Milky Way galaxy is a barred spiral galaxy, and is thought to contain approximately 100 billion stars. Galaxies are thought to have formed through the gravitational collapse of primordial matter, and are crucial in our understanding of the structure and evolution of the universe.
