Dred Scott v Sandford was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in 1857, originating in Missouri, which held that African Americans could not be considered citizens and therefore had no right to sue in federal courts. The Court also declared the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional, which had prohibited slavery in certain territories. The decision worsened tensions between North and South and ultimately contributed to the start of the American Civil War.
