I am running for the Texas state senate as a democrat for this paper. My district number is 16 and the current state representative for my district is senator Don Huffines. He is from the republican party. According to the district analysis documents (District Profile TEXAS SENATE DISTRICT 161 ACS 2010-2014 Estimates), total population of the district is 846,307 of which overwhelming majority (65.8%) are between the ages of 18-64. There are more elderly people of ages 65 years and above then children from 0-4 years old.
Education is one of the main pillars of success for an individual, but my district seems to be lagging in education. 15.3% of the population haven’t even completed high school. Only 44.1% have completed their bachelor’s degree and even few (26.3%) are in college for their master’s degree. There are signs of problem with the education system from the beginning because only 67.2% are in kindergarten through high school. And 61.4% are in preschool through 12th grade. Early education is very important because it gives you basic knowledge that everyone should have.
Not only that but 10.1% of the population can’t even speak English.
As for employment, most people work in the private sector (85%) while 7.8% work in the government sector and 7.1% are self-employed. Education, health care and social service industry employs the most people (17.5%) closely followed by Professional, scientific, management, administrative, and waste management industry at 17.1%. There are least number of people employed in Agriculture, forestry, fishing, hunting, and mining sectors at 0.9%. Not great but an encouraging statistic is that 80% of the population have worked at least in the past 12 months.
People working more than 35 hours a week are at 55.4% and less than 35 hours a week are at 6.6%. In terms of election results, majority 49.9% voted for Clinton and 45.3% voted for Trump. But Trump got the most votes in the state of Texas with 52.2% of the votes while Clinton got 43.2%. Don Huffines is a republican but democratic nominee Clinton got more votes in the district. It shows that people want a change in the district.
Two main issues in district 16 because of demographic currently includes education and employment. My campaign will be focused on improving those issues which the current representative of district 16 (senator Don Huffines) has not been able to fix. Yes, my district is gerrymandered because it does not have a regular shape like a rectangle, square of but it has irregular shape with a lot of curves. It is drawn to support one political candidate or party over another (senate district 16). I took both the surveys and the first one shows that I am an independent rather than a democrat or a republican. I have always thought of myself not affiliated with one party or another. I thought of myself as independent and the survey confirmed my thinking. I like to keep myself aware of the current affairs and sites like Youtube has helped me a lot. Even though there are biases in the way people talk about news, I take my news from different sources so that I can filter out the biases. I think this is one of the reasons I am in the independent category rather than a republican or a democrat. The second survey I took said that I was best fit for new era enterprisers rather than general public. I think I am in this category because I try hard not to have any biases towards anything. Like, my parents hate the fact that Trump is the president of USA. But I don’t hate or like him, I want to see how someone who doesn’t have much political background can run a nation.
Till now he hasn’t done a great job in my opinion, but he still has 2 more years of his 1st term in office. Given the results, and my previous district analysis research, my three platforms are: 1. “Equality and freedom for all regardless of race, disability, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic or immigration status” (Texas Democratic Party Platform). 2. Ending situations where people who are not able to pay bail have to go to prison. 3. Providing education at an affordable price. Mine and the democratic parties’ views are similar in many aspects such as Equality and freedom for all regardless of race, disability, religion, gender, identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic or immigration status, ending situations where people who are not able to pay bail have to go to prison. But they differ is others like democrats want to make “community college free for all students who complete high school in Texas” (Texas Democratic Party Platform). I believe that is not the right thing to do because first you are ignoring students of other state to are now living in Texas and you are also creating a financial burden of the community college because they are going to receive less money to develop their infrastructure. It leads to poor education for those same students who studied in Texas and those who are from other states.
