“When the sharpest words wanna cut me down. I’m gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out. I am brave, I am bruised. I am who I'm meant to be, this is me.”, This Is Me. My ladder to success has a few broken rungs on the way to the top. I struggle to climb it, but it’s about what I learn on the way that helps me grow. I will recount a time in which I experienced failure, how failure affects me and what I’ve learned from failure.
Most of my time is spent at the skating rink and I travel hours to get training that I can’t get where I live.
One of my favorite figure skating events to compete in is light entertainment. In my light entertainment, I was performing the song “This is me” from the Greatest Showman. I had practiced for three months, and it was the last competition of the season.
The music started with me wearing a red tailcoat and top hat. About ten seconds into the program I hit the cold, hard ice. I just fell. The sense of failure trailed me for the rest of my program and caught me once I left the ice. Seriously, I could have done better, and I just proved her right. I let one of my teammates negatively affect my thought about my abilities. One mindless comment made me feel so small and caused me to underestimate myself. I will never let it happen again.
Failure has such a negative connotation in our society.
It's been drilled into our head since childhood that failure is bad, but it’s a big part of all our lives. It seems to me that failure affects everyone no matter who they are. Failure has made me feel helpless, distorted my perception, and made my goals seem unattainable, but only because I let it. As I have gotten older, I’ve realized that most of the failure I experience happens when I let things outside of my control affects my thoughts. Failure is all about what is in your mind. Letting myself fall into the traps that others are setting up around me is something that is avoidable. I just need to be stronger than all the outside noise and listen to what I think about myself. I must understand that to win I may fail because it’s ok to fail. Learning this truly helped me thrive in life.
Failure is defined in the dictionary as a “lack of success.”. I believe failure is a necessary thing that can affect me in a positive way. The lessons learned from failure can be overcome and used to my advantage. Failure is just a way of telling me that I’m getting stronger and closer to my goals. Like Thomas Edison said “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”. Every time I persevere through letting fear shut me down, I learn that I come out stronger on the other side; failure is a beautiful thing that I should not fear but welcome. As a figure skater, I fail a lot. Every time I learn a new skill, I’m bound to fail. I'm proud to say that even though I fail a lot I get back up and try again and I'm stronger because of it.
Success and failure are seemingly contradictions, but failure is the stepping stone that leads to success. You can’t have one without the other. I’m not saying failing doesn’t hurt. Of course, it will hurt, but it’s what I choose to do with the pain that's important to my success. To stand at the top of the podium among the best, you must be willing to stand proudly at the bottom looking up to see what could be one day. “ Look out ‘cause here I come!”, This is me.
