Service to the poor is all about being ready to give up doing meaningful and professional things so as to listen, to feed, to shelter, to be with the poor who may not have your level of education and experience.
I learnt it is not easy to be in their shoes. A child, teenager or adult should not be living without the daily needs in a person's life. A bed to sleep in, clean water facilities and clothing should be given to every single person.
Money should be balanced out, one person should not earn more and more money than another. If the money was to circulate around countries this would reduce the cause of poverty. There should be sufficient resources for a poor person to earn money for themselves. If each and every person of the country will work and earn, then poverty can be removed easily.
With small steps, come great steps, and with these great steps each and every one of us can help others less fortunate than ourselves, understand the greater good in life.
The core values I gained in this community service is Commitment.
A commitment to doing good for the whole. A commitment to sustainability and to acting in an environmentally friendly way. A commitment to helping those less fortunate. A commitment to building strong communities. We need to value more of these people the same as everyone else because they deserve to be treated with respect. Another value I gained is Compassion, I feel compassion for these people and I really wanted to help them out more if I just could.
I recognized their way living and felt I needed to take action on it. That's why I really did participate in all as much as possible. Last but not the least, the main core value I learnt is perseverance. I will continue doing this even if I have this program. I will still continue doing what is right and what these people deserve even if I'm still a student. I will do whatever I can do to help.
I realized that they needed more than we expected. But as for our situation we are just students we can't be of any much help as much as we want to. But also, reaching out to them was a relief by giving their needs. And as long as it made them happy, I/we are happy too.
We experienced a great teamwork. The process of teamwork which I experienced started with a goal setting, followed by awareness, development of trust within each other, cooperative activities, extended challenges. We did overcome many challenges as to face these people and knowing how much they needed. It has been very hard to accept how unfair it is. At every stop I made, I just had to smile at them cherish the moment maybe it can make a difference and let them know we treat them as ONE.
