Effective staff selection method forms the basis of assimilating and maintaining the best staff in an organization for higher productivity. This has been the case due to the fact that organizations effect their production, management, and developmental demands mainly through the staff. This has led to the frequently assumed notion that it is the employees who effect or break an organization's mission. However, there is no ideally considered system for recruiting staff by organizations and institutions.
Indeed, many organizations tend to assimilate a combination of different methods at various instances as they try to get the most suitable candidates (Christopher and Jerrell, 54-58).
Unlike in the previous periods when resumes were used as the major systems of evaluating the employees to be, other systems have cropped up to add flavor and raise the chances of narrowing to the best candidates during the hiring processes (Foot and Hook, 102). It is with this respect that this paper seeks to evaluate the different staff selection methods that are used in the recruitment process.
Using examples, this paper explores these methods while examining their effectiveness in detecting the best candidates. 2. Employee referral system This is an internal system of hiring staff by an organization from the existing employees' social networks.
Notably this system has gained popularity with about 52. 2% of the US organizations employing it when they want to fill vacant positions. It is worth noting that in all the processes of organizations' management, it is important to ensure that the core principles of effective management like cost efficiency are maintained while achieving the highest possible results.
This system is therefore considered superior due to its ability to reduce the overall costs which could be involved when hiring staff using other systems like agency services.
To add to that, candidates selected are familiar with the operations of an organization and therefore requires no extended orientation. Analysts have praised the system claiming that it assists in motivating staff and enhancing staff retention capacity in an organization. Arguably, it forms a major connotation for greater levels of employees and management cooperation as employees easily identify with the management (Gatewood and Hubert, 88-89).
However, it is considered to be highly limiting to external employees it considers only the internal employees for the available chances (Christopher and Jerrell, 39). This is a major undoing for an organization as it blocks out major talents and innovative minds without any slight consideration. It may be a major factor of slowing down external outlook for an organization. Southwest Airlines and Dutch Shell Company Limited have exclusively employed the system.
