Insect repellence is also harmful to us. It is made of chemicals which bring to us in jeopardy. These chemicals affect the mosquitoes and even our health. So instead of good effects, the chemical repellence may take our health at risk. That is why we came up to one purpose. This is the reason why the researcher decides to make cow dung as a mosquito repellent. There are commercially available mosquitos repellent in the market. The commonly used commercial mosquito repellent in the Philippines is quite unaffordable and uses chemicals that may cause irritation.

CHAPTER II
A. REVIEW RELATED STUDY

The Organic Mosquito Rod is a mosquito repelling incense. It is usually shaped spiral but to make it easier we made it a rod. The rod is usually a held at the bottom tip of the rod, suspending it in the air. Burning usually begins at the tip of the rod and progresses slowly towards the bottom rod, producing a mosquito repellent smoke. Typical mosquito incense can measure 15 cm. in diameter and can last up to 2 hours or more depending on the wind present while the rod can be measured 10-12 cm. long and can last up to an hour and 20 minutes once burn at the tip of the rod. Lemon grass (Cybopogon citrates) is a perennial herb widely used in Asian cuisine. It is commonly used for teas, soups and curries. In the Philippines lemon grass is called “tanglad” commonly used to savour Filipino delicacies.

In a study Evaluation of Herbal Essential oil against Mosquitoes by the Department of Plant Production Technology and Faculty of Agricultural Technology in Bangkok Thailand affirmed that lemon grass indeed contains organic repellents against mosquitoes. In a laboratory experiment, volunteers were instructed to apply oil extracts from different target crops including lemon grass on one of their arms, while the other was untreated (control). Both hands were inserted in a cage containing 250 nulliparous female mosquitoes ageing 5-7 day old. Mosquitoes were observed in terms movements and behaviours. Results showed that oil extracts from lemon grass, peppermint, eucalyptus, citronella, and cloves were effective to repel both dengue and malaria mosquitoes.

However, the repellent effects of these oil extracts do not last longer compare to synthetic chemicals, thus, further study to improve its formulation and efficacy is needed. Another study on “The Effectiveness of Lemon Grass as a Natural Mosquito Repellent” by the University of Southern California (USC), comparing the repellent efficacy of lemon grass extract to the DEET (N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide) based repellents or the leading commercial brands for insect repellents has found that lemon grass extract could be used as an alternative to chemical insect repellent.

Conclusion

“Prevention is better than cure” that statement leads us to propose this project. Cow’s Manure Mosquito Rod helps us to prevent from having a disease without harmful effect that usually we get from chemical insecticides. According to the research, cow manure is an effective insect repellant so we actually want to improve it. Through different experimentations, we have proven that cow manure is an effective organic insecticide. We improved it by adding dried lemon grass which makes the product more effective. Lemon grass adds fragrance which is not irritable to the nose. Cow’s manure mosquito rod with dried lemon grass shows effectiveness that it actually repel the mosquitos

Recommendation

Using mosquito repellant is one way to prevent diseases caused by mosquitoes. But we cannot deny that there is a time that we are lack of money for our daily needs. So we recommend our investigatory product as a replacement. The good thing is, it is an organic mosquito repellant made from cow dung together with paper and lemon grass to add scent on it. We already tried it and we can say that it is an effective protection from mosquitoes. It is easy to do and it helps us to save money for important uses. We must ensure our safety especially nowadays that diseases continue to spread everywhere.

Cow manure might look disgusting but we must give a try in using this organic mosquito repellant. So we recommend it to you then you give your final verdict after using it.
