The controversy over if the book is better than the film is very old because cinema has relied on the novels since its origins. But this controversy always comes back because is very easy to disagree with a film adaptation if you have previously read the novel. Nowadays we often see new movies which are based on books in theaters. And a lot of people that like books say that these are better than the movies, creating a new debate in the world. However, since the movies have been invented the use of books have declined very much. Generally, the people that prefer books instead of movies think that our imagination develops better when reading than watching something. But the new generations prefer to watch movies because of the huge budgets that produce a much more exciting and intense form of entertainment. So we have a group of people that prefer books and another group that prefer movies, and each belittle the other. But there is also a group that enjoy both equally and do not judge what others prefer.
The people that prefer books over movies have a lot of arguments to support what they think is better. One of the arguments that they say is that when we watch a movie we start thinking that the characters and landscapes in the book look like the actors and scenarios that are in the movie. For example, in the books of Percy Jackson Percy is supposed to be a 12-year-old kid. But in the movie he looks sort of athletic and is 16 years old. Another thing they say is that are parts of the book that we enjoy and we would like to see on the film. But when the movie comes out that part is not even filmed and we could get very disappointed. A good example is in the first book of Harry Potter series are a lot of places that are described in the book. But places like some classes or the room of the Quidditch players are omitted in the film. Finally, they say that writing a book is a lot easier and cheaper than making a movie. And the writers can describe unreal places in their books that cannot be created no matter how much money the producers invest in the movie.
On the other hand, we have the group of people that prefer movies and likewise the other group of people, they have their own arguments to support their thoughts. The first argument they have is that watching movies is very convenient because it only takes two hours or less. In contrast, reading a book can take several days or even weeks depending in the length of the book. For example, this could be useful if you have to make a report about a book in very short period of time, you can watch the movie and have enough time to do the report. Another argument they have is that movies present action, emotion, and so on, bringing the audience into the story in a much more entertaining way. A very good example of this are the new movies that use special effects because the new technologies used for the movies allow us to watch incredible scenarios in the screen of the theaters.
Finally, we have the last group that is an interesting phenomenon in this debate because they like both sides movies and books equally. The interpretation of a book into a movie is expressed by the ideas of the director. Meanwhile reading the book, develop the reader's imagination. So we have options to entertain ourselves and we have to enjoy both equally. For example, in the Harry Potter movies we can enjoy the characters in both the books and movies because each adds something to the story.
In conclusion, a book has the same value as a movie, due to the fact that in books you can discover different kind of characters and their characteristics, you can imagine how they are, how the scenery is and so on. But in movies you can watch all of it from the director's perspective, so you can enjoy in a different way the same story that you read in the book. The magic of movies and books is to choose an idea and create an entire new world. And that is why both kind of art try to transmit to the viewer the magic of being part of the story. Each of them have their weaknesses and strengths, sometimes is good to read the book and let your imagination fly, but in other occasions is better to watch a movie with someone and share your reactions. So just enjoy whatever you prefer both are excellent choices.
