Cologne Cathedral, German Kölner Dom, Roman Catholic house of prayer church, situated in the city of Cologne, Germany. It is the biggest Gothic church in northern Europe and highlights monstrous twin towers that stand 515 feet (157 meters) tall. The house of prayer was assigned an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996.

At the hour of its fulfillment, Cologne Cathedral was accepted to be the world’s tallest structure, a differentiation it held until 1884, when the Washington Monument was done. It kept on being the world’s tallest structure until it was surpassed by Ulm (Germany) Cathedral in 1890. Cologne Cathedral was severely harmed by Allied air strikes in 1944, yet the medieval windows had been expelled in advance.

By 1948 the ensemble had been reestablished and was again in customary use, just like the remainder of the inside by 1956. In the late twentieth century work started to fix the impacts of corrosive downpour on the stonework.

The craftsmanship fortunes of Cologne Cathedral are numerous and changed.

Close to the high special stepped area is the enormous gold Shrine of the Three Kings, containing what are said to be relics of the Magi who went to the newborn child Jesus. The hallowed place, a magnum opus of medieval goldwork, was started by the prominent goldsmith Nicholas of Verdun in 1182, finished in around 1220, and initially introduced in the ancestor house of prayer.

The altarpiece in the Lady Chapel (on the south mass of the ensemble) is a triptych entitled The Adoration of the Magi (c. 1445), which was made by Stefan Lochner, one of the remarkable painters of the Cologne school.
