Article about the case of a woman

This paper describes an event about a woman, Ms. Brandwein who was refused to finance by several banks of Washington. But she kept on her struggles and achieved her dream. For the research, a classical theory, i.e., the conflict theory and contemporary theory, i.e., the feminist theory has been applied to the event. The paper provides the understanding of the fundamental concepts of the two sociological theories, how the two theories apply to the event. In short, the Conflict theory describes inequality due to unjust distribution of resources, status, and power among the members of the society.

The feminist theory explains that women are treated unequally; face gender differentiation and discrimination, and structural oppression across the world. After briefly mentioning the concept of the theories the event is discussed in the light of these theories. Highlighting the factor that proves that these theories apply to the event, we concluded that women empowerment is the basic requirement to achieve sustainability.

The event I have selected for applying the classical and contemporary theories on took place in the capital of USA, i.e., Washington.

The reason of rejection was the mindset that how can a female chef own a big, ambitious restaurant in Washington without any male partner? Bankers were reluctant because there were no other successfully running restaurants of that sort, i.e., owned by a woman.

Ms. Brandwine didn't lose hope, and it took four years to get the required funding for the restaurant. Small investor, colleagues, and customers whom she talked into a deal helped her in this regard. After arranging the finance, she started hiring women for all the management positions. She was of the thought that once the restaurant succeeded it would stand out as an example for other female chefs and entrepreneurs. Finally, she opened up in 2015. Since then it has been a hit for the reinvention of Italian Classics, especially the penne ala Norma altered by her into eggplant Alla Norma. According to Ms. Brandwine, the restaurant business is changing, and female chefs are getting bit more of the respect and attention they deserved. (Clark, 2018)

Conflict theory given by Karl Marx describes that conflicts between two members of a society are the result of an uneven and unjust distribution of the resources, status, and power. Conflict theory can be best explained in a single word as favoritism. Karl Marx believed that it's the society specifies the place of men and women in the society. Every human in society strives to fulfill the necessities of life including shelter, food, clothing, etc. Inequality in resources and power can be understood as the producers or the owners of the resources have complete hold over the material, wealth and politics whereas, the working or the poor class has been oppressed and have no control over the basic need of life. Similarly, inequality in status implies discrimination by age, gender, culture, religion, etc. Inequality or injustice gives birth to disputes and conflicts in society. The values, policies, and conditions set by the group having power are forcefully imposed on the weak member of the society. Conflict arises when the necessities of a member are not met. And to resolve these tensions, the institutes of the society have to work to set a new social system (Coser, 1957).

Conflict theory has played an essential role in developing some essential contemporary theories like Feministic theory. According to the subject of the theory, it is more like conflict theory highlighting discrimination faced by women in society due to their gender and sex. It discusses gender differences, inequalities, and structural oppression. The theory analysis the positions assigned to women and men in society. For example, gender discrimination in labor household activities. Liberal feminists are of the view that women not only face gender difference but also women are treated unequally. Women have the same potential as men in every field of life. But, stereotypes disagree with the argument and oppression is forced. Inequality can be judged from the instance that Men are employed for higher-Ranks and Women are paid less as compared to men for doing the same job. That may give rise to conflicts in societies (Freedman, 2001).

Keeping in view Amy Brandwein event, Ms. Brandwein vision was judged in the parameter of stereotypes. A banker in her case played this role. According to their perception, how can a female chef run a restaurant without the supervision of any male? There fear for the failure of Ms. Brandwein vision made them reluctant to invest in her plan. Or the situation can be considered differently as bankers being stereotypes did not want to see a female lead in the restaurant industry. Instead of Ms. Brandwein if a male chef has approached the bank, he would have been provided with the required funds immediately without doubting the future success of the restaurant business. It can be considered as an act of favoritism and giving privilege to the male class. This status difference contributes to conflicts. Both theories can help women by motivating them to live their dream and pursue them through continuous efforts. As well as it provides self- confidence, and self-reliance. Similar did happen in Ms. Brandwein case. After rejection, she didn't stop her struggle to become a restaurant owner. Gender discrimination placed before her by the banks of Washington motivated her to fulfill her dream. Her act of hiring female employees gives a clear hint to remove discrimination women face in the workplace.

According to me, the theory of feminism is the best fit for the Amy Brandwine situation. Ms. Brandwine faced inequality due to being a female chef. Her right to persuading her vision was tried to oppress by the bankers (having control over the financing facility). Regardless of paying any attention to the skills and experiences she had, she was severely rejected only due to not having a male head for the restaurant. This male preference would have led to the oppression of the female class. The superior of the society has always designated women to the cooking in the household. But her trying to pursue the same work a profession was not appreciated. Employing female staff served in women empowerment as well.

From the Amy Brandwine event, we may conclude that women are being treated unequally across the globe irrespective of the borders. This need to be changed, the social institutions should take responsibility to change this fact and work on the improvement of women and make sure that men and women should be given equal right to choose their professions. We should start expecting more out of women and believe in them and provide them a society where they can work to fulfill their visions.
