Analysis of “The Storm” by Kate Chopin

In the short story, “The Storm,” author Kate Chopin sets the story in the 19th century, in the backlands in southern Louisiana, where many storms pass through. Chopin uses the title of the short story to set the tone and setting between two of the main characters Calixta and Alcee who share a passionate encounter during a storm that is about to hit in their local area. The storm can be perceived in many ways. For Calixta and Alcee, their love for each other was like a storm, dangerous, and can cause a lot of damage.

But when the clouds part and everything is clearer, their love for each other is clearer than ever. In the end they the storm dissipates, Alcee and Calixta must go their separate ways, seemingly much richer for their encounter. But the storm internal storm ends bringing the happiness in the lives of the characters.

The passionate encounter takes place during the storm, as like any storm, it rolls through and then ends abruptly, just like how Chopin told the story.

The storm pushed Calixta and Alcee back together into each other's arms and giving them the time get passionate before the world returns to normal. “When he touched her breasts, they gave themselves up in quivering ecstasy, inviting his lips. Her mouth was a fountain of delight. And when he possessed her, they seemed to swoon together at the very borderland of life's mystery. Alcee and Calixta knew that this storm might bring problems, it also brought new opportunities as well.

When the storm hits and passes by so does their internal love for each other. It is the last sentence in the story that truly makes the final comparison to the storm. “So, the storm passed, and everyone was happy.”

In a single sentence, Chopin ends the storm, the affair, and the story. When the storm dissipates, Alcee and Calixta go their separate ways, seemingly much for the sake of their family. Although they might go their separate ways the storm brought them together. The title in it itself tells the story and setting. The meaning of love for Calixta and Alcee was always much deeper, indicating that their happiness has resulted from the passion they shared during the storm, and they both know that getting caught could ruin their marriages, but the danger only heightened the passion. The short story can be perceived in many ways but after all, the two couples end up where they began, happily married.
