Ivy League University is the place where every student dreams. Recently, a decision announced by Stanford University has caused heated discussion. This is a paper written by Frank Bruni about College Admissions, it is showed that the results are shocking. This paper aims to describe the solution about college students and the college admissions of famous schools with the method of interviewing, which is direct at all common people.

Bruni suggests that it has been the highest rate of application in Stanford.

it is expected to become the highest admission rate school, and according to Stanford University, it will make it in the near future. At the same time, the result causes great discussion. First of all, there are some opinions from some other’ s school officials. The propaganda of university is not in proper position, and the simple way of propaganda is no longer enough for today’s pattern. The University of Pennsylvania has decided that the top 4% of high school students in each SAT ranking will receive a gift from the University of Pennsylvania next year.

Another school official suggest that the creativity of students would be more important. What’s more, there are also some opinion from students. Alissa Parker, a 18 year-old students, who says that there will be gap between admissions of Yale and admissions of Duke. Another student Tyler says he will consider to apply for Stanford.

Taking “meet them on their turf, especially if it’s leafy and a rich source of vitamin B6.” as example in the essay. This is a sentence of metaphor. It is a hidden simile. It is the ontology and the metaphor appear at the same time, and they are in a form of a corresponding relationship, saying that A (ontology) is (metaphor) B (meta). Metaphors often consist of: is, become, become and so on. This does not need to be a complete sentence. For example: The high-rise garbage repository is a metaphor for both accomplishment and failure. (Richard Sever). The metaphor makes the sentence easier to be understood and vividly expresses the emotion of speaker. it makes the sentence more concise. Here, the sentence is used to express that the school official’s desire to creativity of students.

Bruni suggests that Stanford’s decision seems to jeopardize its fundraising activities. However, in recent years, Stanford University executives have noticed that as the school refuses more and more people, it has received more and more donations, and its donation base has risen along with its exclusivity, and its luster has attracted the wealth of Silicon Valley.

Taking “luster a magnet” as example in the essay. It is metaphor, too. Luster means a quality that outshines the usual, the visual property of something that shines with reflected light and a surface coating for ceramics or porcelain. “luster” here means attention. Magnet means (physics) a device that attracts iron and produces a magnetic field and a characteristic that provides pleasure and attracts. However, “magnet” here means “appeal”. For example, the world is a stage (Shakespeare). The metaphor makes the sentence easier to be understood and vividly expresses the emotion of speaker. it makes the sentence more concise. Here, the sentence is used to express that the school official’s desire to creativity of students.

Bruni suggests that the other famous schools in the Ivy League would be affected by the decision of Staford. Some of the managers of these institutions are ashamed of accepting more than 6%, and they blame themselves for inadequate international promotion. Carnegie Mellon University vowed that it would quadruple the number of applicants in Greenland over the next five years. The University of Chicago announced plans to host a university fair in Ulaanbaatar.

Taking “shock waves” as example in the essay. This is a sentence of synecdoche. shock waves means the decision of Stanford. The synecdoche is not to directly say the name of a certain thing, but a rhetorical means of expressing the thing by the various corresponding phenomena presented by the thing itself. The synecdoche is also known as the law of the couple. The synecdoche is different from the metaphor (by generation). The metaphor is mainly based on close relationships and associations, while the metaphor is based on partial similarity. In order to simplify the generations, to achieve the virtual, to the odds of the generation, to express the matter. For example, Outside,(there is) a sea of faces. Here, with synecdoche, it is used to show the great effect of the decision of Stanford.

This is a good essay which is clear and easy to understand to readers with many rhetoric.
