In the main website of the game, it described super columbine massacre RPG as delving into the morning of April 20th, 1999 and asking players to relive that day through the eyes of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, the two teenagers responsible for the deadliest school shooting in American history. The visual quality of the game is not like the 3D animations that are so popular among gamers. Instead, it looks more like an old Nintendo game where characters are so tiny the only emotion you can see them do is jump up and down.
According to Danny Ledonne, the creator of the game, he did not really have the technical knowledge in creating a game but had spent years conceptualizing one. Then one day, he came across a program called RPG Maker 2000 and spent almost six months completing the game. It was made available online on April 20, 2005, the sixth anniversary of the Columbine Massacre. The game starts of in the morning of April 20, 1999 where Harris and Klebold meet in Harris’ basement to plot their bombing of the school cafeteria before opening fire on the fleeing students.
Ledonne spent a great deal of time laying the foundation why Harris and Klebold were acting like deranged lunatics. Minute details such as the box of Luvox (anti-depressant) on Harris’ room and finding a CD of Marilyn Manson was incorporated in the game. They made a video apologizing to their parents and asking the police not to arrest anybody in their family. Harris even recounted that he had the most amazing parents in the world and how he wished he could’ve been a psychopath so he wouldn’t feel guilty.
After that, they packed their guns one by one as the player goes to the inventory and slid them inside two duffel bags.
As the characters speak to each other, photos of the real life Harris and Klebold were attached as each dialogue emerge. Harris and Klebold were also shown aboard a car (presumably on the way to school) reciting Shakespeare “Good wombs have borne bad sons”. Each time they kill someone in the game, the dialogue “Another victory for the Trench Coat Mafia” appears. After wreaking havoc all through out the game, killing jocks, preppys and more, Harris and Klebold turned the gun to themselves saying “It’s time”. In which a montage starting with the real picture of the two boys sprawled on the floor drenched in their own blood was shown.
Then photographs taken after the incident in Columbine such as students comforting each other, parents crying over their children, and survivors clinging steadfastly to their loved ones were shown. After which, a slide show of the two gun men when they were young was also revealed. This part of the game showed what Ledonne really wanted. He wanted to show that Harris and Klebold were also normal children who had been forced to act into something which they believe could level-up their status and get back at those people who had hurt them.
“It puts you in the mindset of the killers and provides a very clear suggestion of why they did what they did; they were enacting an ideological demonstration through a terrorist act, and the game shines light on this as an indictment of the American dream and way of life painfully close to the main nerve” (Dugan, 2007). Ledonne tried to show the loneliness and depression Harris was going through by making secondary storylines such as Harris’ love for Brenda and how she broke his heart. The second level of the game after the suicide was the boys found themselves in hell where they battle demons and a caricature of Satan.
According to Clive Thompson of Wired. com, Ledonne shared the secret in winning the game - you have to kill as many students as you can before you die so that the more horrible you get, the more strong you will be in hell; “It's a little joke -- you have to be really, really bad to survive in hell... But I'm also making a point about choice in real life. The killers made a choice every time they pulled the trigger, and it affected them. You make the same choices in the game, and it affects you. ”
