The Vietnam in Me Book Review

Categories: Free Essays

O`brein’s writing is more of an exploration of his true feelings. As a war veteran, he holds in himself some pieces of information that a normal citizen can’t understand. He has seen too much blood, fired too much bullets, and saw to many dead people. Even as a trained soldier, his experiences as a member of the Alpha Company at war in Vietnam is not like any past time stories that people would tell others. It is like he was sharing a piece of himself to us; part hesitation, part excitement, he slowly unfolds the deepest of his memories to his readers.

O`brein didn’t just recount his experiences.

He wishes the readers to feel what he has felt about the memories he shares as he searches for the words to write. For a very long time, his coming back to Vietnam awakens a certain feeling of uneasiness, a certain feeling of guilt. He didn’t share any other part of his life except when he was in the war and when he came back to Vietnam.

His return to the country he despised for a very long time made him realize the truth. He was already attached to Vietnam, where it is not because of the views or the food, but because of the memories.

He created his very own Vietnam in himself. That’s why even after a few decades, he still cant get over the feeling of war. It has caused him a great deal of pain, but the more he thinks about it, the more he gets attached to it.

The war made him leave a piece of himself in the place where the war happened. It was unexpected, something that O`brein was unaware. He finally realized this when he lost everything, even his loved one. It all came back to him, the dead bodies, the gun shots, the war, Vietnam.
