The Reasons Why Euthanasia Should Be Legal

Do you feel as if it’s a crime to grant the wishes of a loved one who is in pain or dying? Euthanasia is illegal in a multitude of countries. If someone you love is suffering from a terminal illness, this means that they would have to deal with living and feeling unbearable pain for the rest of their life. Euthanasia is a very disputed topic. Many think that it’s murder. People believe that doctors are killing their patients.

Would you consider that maybe it’s for the sympathy of the patient? If a doctor isn’t telling the patient that death is the option, is it considered murder? The choice is always the patients’. Euthanasia is legal in a few places, but there is still rules and regulations to follow. I believe that suffering takes form in the physical aspect of pain as well as the mental. Human beings have the right to decide when and how to die.

Would you want to live to be in pain that can’t be described in words? Belgian law states that citizens can be euthanized if a doctor confirms that they are in 'constant and unbearable physical or psychological pain' resulting from an 'accident or incurable illness'. The reason to legalize euthanasia is quite obvious. People who are suffering need to have the choice to die with dignity. Unfortunately, death can’t be avoided and it happens to everyone.

We are all living to die. Personally, I would want death to be quick with the least amount of pain being felt. Would you want someone you love to suffer from pain that can’t be tolerated? One of the most important commandments that a Christian can follow is “Do not commit murder.” (Exodus 20:13) This raises the question, is euthanasia murder? It is not considered murder if the person is committing the act himself. That is where the term assisted suicide comes into play.

Shouldn’t life be a matter of choice? Euthanasia is the act or practice of killing or permitting the death of hopelessly sick or injured individuals (https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/euthanasia). When someone donates their organs, they have the choice to decide what they want to do with their body. Euthanasia should be legal because it’s the better option. Being that it’s illegal in many countries, that makes the suicide rate go up. We can’t stop a person from committing suicide no matter how hard we try. Why not just make euthanasia legal and eliminate all ongoing issues with suicide? “For someone in extreme distress, though, how is the option of a razor to the wrist or a gun in the mouth more morally palatable than a physician-administered drug? And how is a mess left behind for a family member to find more compassionate than drifting off in a hospital bed?” (Mary Elizabeth Williams)

The legalization of Euthanasia is the best way to go for patients who are suffering from a life threatening illness and are terminally ill. No one wants to die a miserable and painful death. If the shoe was on the other foot, would you want to live with the pain? Many people have opposite views on euthanasia and believe that it should remain illegal. I believe that people who oppose of euthanasia have never been in a situation where they have suffered or have been in unbearable pain. People often tend to make selfish decisions when it comes to the well being of others.

No matter what your religion or belief is, no one wants to suffer or be in pain.

Euthanasia should be legal in today’s society. In an urgent situation, such as an incurable illness, euthanasia shouldn’t be considered murder. My grandfather is 75 years old. He’s been a type I diabetic for several years. Late last year, my grandfathers health started to deteriorate. We found out that he had been suffering from dementia. This disorder has an affect on your brain, causing you to lose memory and have personality changes. The brain cells that allow you to swallow has shut down in my grandfathers brain. He’s now on a feeding tube, which he’ll probably have to be on for the rest of his life if speech therapy doesn’t help. He went from being physically and mentally able to do whatever he wanted to, to not being able to do anything without the help of others.

My grandfather has been hospitalized 5 times in the past 8 months due to aspiration pneumonia. When he was swallowing his food, it would go into his lungs which constantly caused him to get sick. He’s been in ICU for 10 days on a ventilator. It had gotten to the point to where doctors were asking my mom (his power of attorney) if she wanted to pull the plug. Although he’s a soldier, he told me that he doesn’t want to live this way. Euthanasia is not legal in Michigan so my grandfather doesn’t have an option as to whether he wants to live or die. Due to my mother’s selfishness and the love that she has for her father, she’ll rather see him alive and suffering rather than six feet under. When is enough, enough? The doctors will not let my grandfather make any decisions of his own because he’s not in his “right state of mind.” Seeing my grandfather suffer the way that he is, is even more reason why I support the statement that euthanasia should be legal. Take a stand so that we can help those who are suffering miserably due to insufferable pain.
