He estimated the location where the ship would reach by just judging the bad weather and then buying 10 numbers lower than that of the captain. The pool money of about 7000 dollars had made him really greedy, he wanted to buy a Lincoln convertible for his wife but he had bid all of his and his wife's savings without even thinking of how much chances of winning he had.

The next day after seeing the ship move so fast due to the sudden change of weather, he thought of leaping off the ship to slow it down. “The thought of leaping off a ship into the ocean a thousand miles from the nearest land had made Mr Botibol--a cautious man at the best of times--unusually advertent” (139). He shouldn't have bid all of his and his wife ethel's savings on an auction, he shouldn't have even thought about risking his life to win the pool money. He didn't even think about what would happen to his wife if he doesn't make it back successfully. Greed had destroyed his senses. In the end, he jumped off and the old lady who he thought would have alarmed everyone was a mental patient herself and this is how greed led to his own demise!
