Bigfoot: Myth, Mystery, or Elusive Reality

Categories: Bigfoot

Bigfoot, man, beast, or nonexistent, that is the question? Six feet or taller, giant is the word for this "thing." Hairy all over, feet, skull, and hands larger than a humans. All is said about this nonfictional creature, or is it just a story brought upon in the early days to scare away enemies. Can this beast be proven to really exist in our present environment or is it just a myth said to be true to seek acknowledgment?

Bigfoot research began in the late 1950s, it was to solve the theory of the existence of this so-called creature known as Bigfoot.

Sightings from thousands of eyewitness saying that they have caught an eye on a creature not well known to man. This creature was assumed to be extinct. But if this creature is said to be extinct, why haven't there been any remains discovered of this creature? Evidence of this creature have been discovered like foot prints, hairs, and scats.

" Ironically there is barely any physical remains of this species to determine such a thing, except to predict.

Bones or bone fragments may have been discovered in the past, but simply not recognized as remains of Bigfoot. In 1965, at the Sierra Nevada Range, Dr. Robert W. Denton was on a backpacking trip when he came upon a Mexican farm worker trying to pull a mule out of a muddy bog near the river bank. As the mule struggled it's way to escape it unearthed an object that was assumed to be a large rock. Which was introduced to Dr. Denton and was discovered to be a human-like skull. Dr. Denton later on sent it to Dr. Gerald K. Ridge, a pathologist which examined it and discovered that it must belong to "some anthropoid species other than human" more like a species of ape. The skull was sent to another group of doctors for a second opinion. The doctors then concluded the skull to be of a "young, ancient Indian male." As time pasted the skull came to be forgotten and never ended up being finalized on its origin. The skull could be the only true physical remains of the "Bigfoot"

But what about all of these sightings that are said to have taken place? Thousands are reported and a small percentage aren't. But why not? Well, first of all some people don't know where to make the reports but the most common is that they were afraid to make a report. Seeing these supermarket tabloids with the big pictures of a gruesome creature with big sharp teeth with bogus Bigfoot tales have the most affect on them if they are going to report. These reports make people look ridiculous as their observations are considered a joke. Reported sightings are common now as more information is gathered which is conceiving this myth into reality. The most common reasons for not reporting are:

  • fear manifestations,
  • misidentifications of bears,
  • paranormal,
  • the Collective-Memory of Theory,
  • the Bigfoot-Giganto Theory.

The Bigfoot-Giganto Theory has attracted a rising amount of people interests in the legend of Bigfoot over the past few decades. The theory states that Bigfoot is a relative of the genus Gigantopithecus. Which is a "Giant Ape" a giant cousin of the orangutan, and is now presumed to be extinct. Theorists of this theory believe the gigantos had a large brain and an upright-walking posture. They adapted to the mountain climates. The upright position gave them the ability to tolerate cold temperatures, climb through deep snow, and cross high mountain ranges.

Sightings in the early 1920s when a man by the name of Albert Ostman told his story of a hunting and camping trip to Toba inlet, near Vancouver Island. When Albert was asleep in his sleeping bag he was abducted by a male Bigfoot, which carried him over the mountains to a valley surrounded by cliffs. Where he spent six days with a Bigfoot family consisting of a father, mother, son, and daughter when he managed to escape. In the summer of 1988, when a 12 year old boy of Grays Harbor County was fishing in the creek for crayfish discovered more than he expected, 20 feet in front of him it stood over 6 feet tall, a white Bigfoot with blue eyes and a pink complexion. Astonished by his discovery he fled his belongings as he turned to see the white Bigfoot continue up the creek with a limp. In July of 1995, a father and his son arrived at a campsite exploring the land around them with binoculars when the father discovered two Bigfoot wrestling around one black and one white. This sighting was observed by others for about 20-30 minutes.

These creatures are commonly discovered in or near remote wooded, mountainous. or swampy areas. But if they are discovered why isn't there a research group out there to study these creatures? There are a few reasons why there is not many research groups doing documentation's on Bigfoot: A) there aren't many people in the field who are trying to study them, B) No professional wildlife production company wants to commit to a systematic, long-term effort, C) until very recently some crucial technology has not been affordable or available. Plus these creatures are rarely wondering around in daylight hours. If they are, they flee upon sight, or smell of a human to avoid being seen. Bigfoot is considered to be a "intelligent ape" by staying as far away as possible towards civilization, being as cautious as possible.

The Bigfoot seem to never be seen in large groups, traveling mostly at night moving from one place to another, staying in the thickest forest for their protection. When they travel as groups they wander nomadically through the forest. Interacting with each other through loud screams and howls that could be heard from miles in the dead of night. By carefully avoiding confrontations and staying out of view keeps them alive and a mystery to all.

How come a hunter hasn't shot one yet? Most non-hunters believe that hunters will shoot any animal they come across. This is a big misperception of these hunters when they are in "wilderness." Most hunters are focused on their safety and the proper equipment for the present season and game. The hunter most likely doesn't have a powerful enough gun to kill this creature since most high caliber rifles are illegal for hunting. A hunter should also be wearing a bright fluorescent orange hat or jacket which would be highly noticeable for a Bigfoot to notice the hunter before the hunter notices him. Even if Hunting at night when the Bigfoot is most active, the hunter and dogs would either be seen from the lantern or hear the noises of the crackling forests floors which would give enough time to escape discovery. But if the opportunity does occur a surprised hunter must then:

  • overcome his immediate shock, fear and awe in order to have the presence of mind to quickly deliberate and assure himself with absolute certainty that this hairy manlike figure is not a man in a costume,
  • be absolutely certain that his intelligent, powerfully built whatever-it-is will have no negative legal, moral, or supernatural consequences for him and his family either now or in the future,
  • have enough time to get a clear shot before the figure dashes back into the treeline,
  • hit the figure in a vital organ so it falls down quickly.

Bigfoot is still a question it seems. If there is no truthful evidence of a captive one or the remains of a complete one can it actually be real? Are all of these people telling the truth or is it from a prolonged stare that turns into imaginable image? Bigfoot means different things to different people, it depends on how much knowledge they have on this subject. People that live to see those fake papers that are published about sightings have no knowledge on what is the truth. The ones that do study up on this or may have seen the real thing (Bigfoot) may know the truth. But the truth to physical evidence of this creature still remains a mystery to all. Which the confusion of perception of Bigfoot is the reason why this species is still officially unacknowledged.
