Are sasquatches real or are they just a made-up hoax like the Chupacabra? Almost everyone has heard of shows where hunters search for the majestic sasquatches that are impossible to capture even snap a picture of. Hunters have never successfully captured a sasquatch, why do people continue to watch the shows? Are the shows made for publicity? Why are seasons of Finding Bigfoot renewed when not a single episode has shown a clear image or video of them? Often times hunters encounter a pack of wolves or mistakenly confuse a recording from the camera crew.

Many hunters confuse Sasquatch with brown bears, which explains the diverse encounter descriptions. Several people picture sasquatch as a massive beast that will kill anything and everything that comes across its path. There are also those who believe that they are harmless bears. So which one is it, who is right and who is wrong? Although, there are many people who believe hunters are “acting” simply for publicity and ratings, there is more to it than faking it and gaining a fanbase.

The North American folklore, sasquatch, is claimed to roam forests. The name derives from Salish, “wild men,” based on stories people claim they are extremely hairy and look similar to cavemen. It is stated that the wild creature has human traits and fur that resembles an apes fur. Most of the evidence originates from the Pacific Northwest. Countless number of movies have been produced regarding the creature due to the buzz it gained over time.

However, most Americans are skeptical about sasquatches and rather believe it is an undiscovered bear species than agree with a “lunatic sasquatch hunter.”. The legend of the Sasquatch has been a long ongoing story that people find interest in and others find it outrageous to believe since no one has ever caught one. The reason why some don’t believe is because in the past, every video they have captured the sasquatch never appears clear. Some state the recordings are absurd since we have better quality cameras now and the videos and photographs are poor quality and blurry.

Some believe that the search for bigfoot derives from wanting to gain publicity. As Daniel explains in his article “It’s clear that the legend was gradually built up from famous cases-and it seems that many of those cases were hoaxes “(96). Not many people want to believe that the evidence that they find is truthful. As Bryan Sykes explains in his article “modern science has largely avoided this field and advocates frequently complain that they have been ‘rejected by science” (Sykes 5). Even scientists don’t want to be involved in this science because based on what they’ve heard by other researchers is that more than often the hair strains are from bears. It is believed that all the movies made regarding sasquatches are fictional and a big hoax as a way to take money from people. Viewers go on to say that the hunters who are in the shows would stop searching for them if they has fewer viewers.

In addition, humans are very curious and always want to be the first at everything and known for a discovery. This is where the ambition of finding the sasquatches originates from. Most of the time hunters go hiking in mountains and are in search for the sasquatch and aim at being the first to capture it to gain all the fame. There is an enormous sasquatch fan base, some believers are going crazy over them. Many of them become obsessed and are featured in shows such as, Finding Bigfoot. In finding Bigfoot they want their 10 minutes of fame, so they tend to go overboard and exaggerate their stories.

In the show, Finding Bigfoot, they travel town to different towns and meet with people who claim they have the best evidence regarding sasquatches. They even promise the hunters they will find the sasquatch in the place that they believe they saw it. Next, hunters travel to the place where people state they saw a sasquatch. Hunters will then search the premises for an hour or two, and eventually wait until midnight since it is believed they come out at night to hunt. Next, they set up their tents and more importantly the high-tech heat sensor cameras are placed that allow them to spot any movement that comes close to the camp.

When the sun goes down they begin their hunt and disperse into two groups along the forest in order to cover more ground. They carry a pair of night vision binoculars and walkie talkies. They use the walkie talkies to let each other know whenever they are going to make a sasquatch sounding call, so they know its them and not the sasquatch. They take turns and most times they get a response which makes them more eager to find the sasquatch because they know they are close. When they eventually meet up at the middle they regroup at their camp and watch the recordings while they were on foot.

Usually they see a creature in the recordings and analyze it. If they believe it is a sasquatch, they go and do another pass throughout the forest. However, this is not much of a simple task many times they go longer than intended. The reason is that they are in the wild, a place they have never been before, during the night time so they can only see what their flashlights can illuminate.

While there are many reasons as to why people think Sasquatch is as real as Santa Claus. The crew is actually in it for more than just the fame, they truly believe that these sasquatches are out there and that they exist. It’s not just a money-making industry, there are hard believers who plan to be at the right place at the right time and encounter one of these majestic creatures. The crew does much more than just hike in the woods, act crazy, and interview crazy people to make an episode. They put a lot of time and effort and their own time to get concrete evidence from a location.

It’s not just Animal Planet who puts this much time and effort into the finding these sasquatches. There are multiple scientists that have done their research and managed to find credible information. For example, J.D Lozier shares information on where they are located. He makes sure the evidence is clear and checks it with other scientists to make sure it is well thought hypothesis. He uses an atlas to map out where all the depictions were said to be found. As well as information he inputs on his ENM, which helps find the place where sasquatches are predicted to be roaming around. (Lozier 2009)

However, this procedure is not an easy task to perform because there are multiple cases where the hair strains, they find happen to be other wild animal hair strands. He points out how many of the misidentifications of sasquatches are just regular mammals that people with little to no knowledge claim is bigfoot. Simply because they heard stories from people in the county and they believe anything they see in the woods is a bigfoot. In addition, not all the evidence is bad evidence, they also note the patterns of the stories and discovered that sasquatches also migrate. This helps the scientists better locate wherever the sasquatches will migrate to because they find that the sasquatches move from low altitudes and will make them likely be in a specific range.

There is plenty of evidence of sasquatch’s existence, however; from the evidence that researchers have found including multiple eyewitnesses there is still not this concrete evidence that they can prove to the world that they are out there. As Benjamin Radford says in his article “The important criterion, however, is not the quantity of the evidence, but the quality of it. Lots of poor-quality evidence does not add up to strong evidence, just as many cups of weak coffee cannot be combined into a strong cup of coffee (Radford 26.2).” If people actually do their research and talk to witnesses, they will have a second opinion over them. There are too many people in the bigfoot community that ruin it for others. They make up stories to try and stay relevant. They cause many researchers to lose their respect because of the reputation they have received from the people who are in it for the fame.

The evidence is described into three different categories: there is the eyewitness accounts, there are the footprint findings, there is also the recordings of sasquatches. To begin with, the eyewitnesses accounts are claims that people make that they have come eye to eye with the sasquatch. This being the most popular and has had the greatest number of stories derived from it. It is not as credible as the other two because judges and psychologists know that this is not a reliable evidence. But more than often, this is where any kind of Cryptozoology derives from.

Scientists have also claimed stories of encountering these sasquatches, however; the hard part of proving the occurrence is putting it into scientific terms. The footprint findings have made the sasquatch gain the nickname bigfoot. This is no surprise because from the findings the size of the footprint is like no other mammal. This is physical evidence that they have also used to claim its existence. In many cases, the finding of footprints has led to people creating hoaxes and making these footprints on the ground man-made. In addition, from the vast number of claims there is always a difference in the foot layout. It is said that there are cases where the toes are perfectly aligned and there are cases where they’re separated, and also there are reports of sasquatches only having four toes and some cases they have one three. This creates inconsistent evidence from the findings of footprints.

Not all of the footprints are findings of feet, there is also a story of hunters going to Mt. Adams and finding what seemed to be an imprint of a sasquatch that lean into a river for food (Radford 26.2). And the most credible category being the recordings which makes the believers have some type of evidence that they can simply show to another person to persuade them into their opinion. There are many different kinds of videos out there that can confirm the existence of these sasquatches, however; the amount of people that are in for the fame happen that ruin it for the others by simply making animations or creating recordings of bear suits and making it seem like it is a sasquatch. So they have only a handful amount of credible videos that were taken back in 1967 because no one had the technology we have today to make animations or to fake a recording.

There are many people out there that believe that zoology is all false. One of them being sasquatches, the sasquatch community is not respected because of the number of created hoaxes and obnoxious stories that have been said. The Finding Bigfoot cast is an example of hunters who don’t get the respect that they should receive. They are looked at just tv stars and actors that just run around in the wild and yell at nothing. However; they actually spend a lot of time researching out of the show and are devoted to proving to the rest of the non-believers that they are out in the wild. There is plenty of evidence to prove of its existence, but then again there more people who want fame and create these fake animations and false footprints that make it harder for the researchers to prove their findings. People need to stop creating false claims over things that other people devote their life to just to gain some fame, it takes away the respect that these researchers should receive.
