The Heated Opposition of Hamilton and Jefferson in The Patriots

Categories: Alexander Hamilton

The play that was the hottest ticket in town in 1943 was The Patriots. The Patriots was similar to today’s Hamilton because they went over some of the same things such as fights between Hamilton and Jefferson, Hamilton’s plans for the national bank and if the US should support French revolutionaries. The Patriots was different than Hamilton because of the music within the play which wasn’t rap like Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson being the hero of The Patriots. Thomas Jefferson is the perfect symbol for Franklin Delano Roosevelt because he was perceived as a common man who took down Alexander Hamilton, seen as the nation’s plutocrat and champion of Wall Street and the 1%.

Hamilton, rather than Jefferson, was Lincoln Republicans’ favorite founding father because unlike others, Hamiliton actually took a stand to preserve the Union. Also, Hamilton was one of the founding fathers to abolish slavery in New York. On the other hand, Jefferson contributed to slavery and was one of the largest Virginian slave-owners.

The problems facing the Treasury Secretary in 1790 were that the United states was broken, the US was in extreme debt after the Revolutionary war and different states had different commitments towards the long-term durability and their place in the Federal Union.

Hamilton’s first prong of his three-pronged plan to support American finances was for the federal government to consume all of the states’ debts and sell them to European countries. Hamilton described this as a way for the US to get a financial diuretic and to re-establish trade with Great Britain.

The second prong of his plan was to establish a bank. Hamiliton knew that the bank of England was the reason that England could keep fighting wars and he wanted to see that in the United States. The third prong of Hamilton’s plan was tariffs, to protect America from cheaper foreign imports. Thomas Jefferson disagreed with the first prong of Hamilton’s plan because he believed it made no sense to become best friends with Great Britain after a big war, the plan was too long for anyone to understand, only benefited Hamilton, America’s obvious creditor would be America’s archenemy and thought New York should have to pay off their own debts without affecting other states. Jefferson disagreed with the second prong because he thought it was another way to cozy up to Great Britain. Lastly, Jefferson disagreed with the third prong because he believed taxing whiskey would cause riots and rebellions.

Alexander Hamilton is considered the father of the modern financial system because his plans and ideas have shaped the American economy and his ideas are still used today. Hamilton’s birthplace affected his view of himself as opposed to those born in Virginia like Jefferson because since he was the only founding father to be born outside of the 13 colonies, he saw America for what it really was unlike others who were born in the US. Hamilton being from immigrant origins lead to him viewing himself as a real American who was willing to risk it all to build up the government and identity. The difference between farm labor and immigrant factory labor to Hamilton was that farm labor was described as people who did not contribute much since they only planted in spring and harvested in the fall. Hamilton believed that immigrant factory labor was when manufacturing could work all day, as well as women and children could work in the factories.

I would like to see Hamilton influence our classroom by becoming a fun way to connect to history. I’ve noticed that nowadays history is perceived as boring and unnecessary, but with the help of Hamilton I think that perception can be changed. If we as a class watched all of Hamilton and did fun activities relating to the history and production aspects of Hamilton, I believe that us as teenagers would start to enjoy learning about history.

The point of the duel was to prove that you were willing to die for your honor. The majority of duels end with two people shooting at eachother but no one dies because of inaccuracy then they say “good shot fellow”, shake hands and leave. The five words that guaranteed a duel were liar, coward, puppy, rascal, and scoundrel. These words are used to belittle a man and hurt their masculinity which will almost always lead to a duel. Even though dueling was illegal, politicians so readily engaged in it because their political, moral and personal authority relied on their reputation. If leaders/politicians didn’t participate in duels then the people started to think about if the person should really be their leader or not and if they should support them. Hamilton: An American Musical is a big deal because it shows that history can be fun and upbeat. Hamilton takes an old story from The Patriots and gives it a modern twist that was well overdue. Hamilton is a big deal because it shows great performance creativity, talent, and brilliance.
