It has to provide many new possibilities, but so far it remains a bit vague. We are working hard behind the scenes on 5G, the successor of our current mobile internet. But what can we do with that later? In December 2017, an important step was taken in its development and 5G is also a hot topic at the Mobile World Congress, to be held this week in Barcelona. The ambitions are great. Only: those who listen to the Dutch telecom industry also hear about the developments.
In the eyes of many, the Netherlands is insufficiently ready.
The minimum speed of 5G, for example in rural areas, becomes 50 megabits per second. The top speed that you should be able to achieve, for example in the city, is between 1 and 2 gigabit per second. Converted that is 125 to 250 megabytes. Much higher speeds, such as 10 gigabit per second, have also been mentioned in recent years, but these are not speeds that consumers should expect.
The first question that probably comes to mind is when you can use 5G on your phone.
That will take a while. 'For consumers, 4G is a bit the end point,' says Tim Poulus, financial analyst at Telecompaper research agency. 'We can still handle that technology very well, so I think you can assume that we will use 4G for years to come.'
That in itself is not a problem; we can already do a lot with 4G. For example, your Netflix or YouTube live stream does not necessarily get faster from 5G.
In addition, providers are still increasing the speed of the current network. To ensure that these applications can actually be used, agreements have recently been made about which radio technology will use 5G devices, says Toon Norp of TNO. He is also chairman of a working group within the 3GPP, the organization that develops the 5G standard. His team is responsible for drawing up the requirements that the technology must meet. Those agreements were important; the agreement was seen as a milestone.
But, Norp emphasizes, the development of 5G is not yet complete. Because the agreements have to be worked out even further and that only happens this summer. 'See it as if you already have a car that can run 130, while the highway is not yet ready for that.' In other words: it still needs to be discussed how the networks that will be covered by all 5G communication will look like.
Meanwhile, there is already plenty of testing. In the Netherlands we have 5Groningen, an organization that carries out tests with, for example, a drone for monitoring agriculture or ambulances whereby a doctor in the hospital can already watch the patient. In addition, Amsterdam wants to build a 5G network around the Johan Cruijff Arena in 2020 , although the question is whether that will succeed.
