The City Greener Plan Helps Reduce the Carbon Footprint on the Environment

Maggie will be in support of the City Greener plan, which would be beneficial to the environment of West Arcadia and help reduce the carbon footprint on the environment. Focusing on the environment is important because you want the environment to be better for future generations and to prevent disease and health problems. The City Greener plan is important because our lives depend on our environment, such as air, land, and water, and if we don't protect those things, we are essentially harming ourselves and others.

Ways to effectively implement this plan could include offering recycling options, encouraging the use of reusable items instead of one time use items, providing other modes for transportation (public bicycles, public transit, electric vehicles, etc.), and offering incentives to those who utilize renewable energy resources. These are only a few ways we can reduce our carbon footprint, but by starting now we can positively change the effects we have on our environment for our future generations.

Why is City Greener so important and why should you vote in support of City Greener? We can all agree on the obvious fact that our environment is an important factor in our lives and our wellbeing. The resources that provide us with the essentials to living can be affected by our environment, for the better or for the worse. Our hydrological, ecological, and climate systems can all be negatively impacted if we fail to take measures to prevent pollution and reduce our carbon footprint. Our hydrological system consists of the continual circulation of the Earth’s water.

Our ecological system is the system consisting of organisms and their physical environment. Our climate system includes the atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere, which effect temperature, precipitation, and wind conditions. The three systems correlate with one another because neglecting one system can affect another one.

If we fail to take measures in reducing pollution and our carbon footprint then not only will our environment hurt, but so will we. How will we hurt from neglecting our environment? Simple. The air will be polluted and unsafe to breathe, which will lead to diseases and health problems. Our water will be contaminated and unsafe to consume, which will also lead to health problems and disease. Living organisms and their habitats will also be affected by our neglect to the environment. When do we decide that enough is enough? Will it be when our air is so polluted that people will perish or require oxygen tanks to breathe? We need to make a change. Together, we need to act now to stand up and make a change. Small changes can make big differences.

One significant way to make a difference would be to encourage recycling and provide the community with designated bins to recycle different materials. Recycling conserves energy because more energy is used while extracting and processing products made from virgin materials. When you recycle items that will be remade into a similar or the same product, you are using less energy because that item has already been processed at some point.

Moving over to reusable items is another beneficial way to make a difference. Educating people on reducing their use of plastic single use items and why it is harmful to the environment and long-term effects could be eye-opening. This might encourage people to ditch the single use plastics, such as cutlery, straws, plastic bags, and opt out for other alternatives. Some alternatives include reusable tote bags instead of plastic bags, glass or steel beverage containers instead of styrofoam or plastic cups, steel or bamboo straws instead of plastic straws, stainless steel or biodegradable cutlery instead of single use plastic cutlery, and so many more. This is a small transition that can make a big impact over the course of time.

We could also incentivize the utilization of renewable energy resources, such as wind turbines, hydroelectricity, and solar energy. Incentives could include tax incentives and even grant or loan programs to support the installation of equipment. People will be more inclined to transition to renewable energy resources if they are being incentivized. In the long term, renewable energy resources are also more cost effective than non-renewable energy resources.

Another way to make a difference would be for the community to embrace other modes for transportation, such as walking, biking, public transit, or converting to electric powered vehicles. By improving the infrastructure to be aimed towards providing safe and accessible sidewalks, more people would be willing to walk or bike to their destinations. Educating the community on the benefits of other modes for transportation would also encourage these changes. Electric powered vehicles are a great alternative to the common fossil fueled vehicles. “Over a year, just one electric car on the roads can save an average 1.5 million grams of CO2. That’s the equivalent of four return flights from London to Barcelona.” (Moses, 2020, para 3) This would be unbelievably beneficial to the environment if cars were shifted from fossil fueled to electric. It would not be a quick transition but would be done as easy and maintainable as possible even if it is over the course of 15 years.

If everyone does their part to be more conscious of their own carbon footprint and its effects of the environment, then the transition will be much smoother and sooner. We can all make a big difference by making small and reasonable changes. We need to understand that the health of our environment affects our own personal health and the health of others. Our ecosystem will also be impacted if we do not make changes now. There are so many alternatives to what we know and are used to so it will not be a huge transition. Do what is right. Vote in support of City Greener to make our city cleaner, not only for us but for our future generations to come.
