Summary: The Lesson Learned In The Tempest Play

People will do anything to get revenge especially if you took everything from them. In the drama/ Romantic play “The Tempest’ ’William Shakespeare talks about a bitter old man named Prospero. Prospero once had it all until he was wrongfully exiled to a deserted island with his daughter Miranda. During this Prospero was at a low point in his life, he then sets out to gain revenge on those responsible for stealing his throne and exiling him and his daughter. In the beginning of the play Prospero is seen as a bitter person who controls magical powers.

Prospero uses these powers to get what he wants, when receiving this he changes from a bitter person to a forgiving person who then gives up the powers.

The play begins with Prospero holding a grudge he may not have worldly power, but he uses magical powers as a substitute. For example, “Supposing they saw the King’s ship wracked and his great person perish.

Prospero then uses his power to manipulate Ariel and uses him to bring Alonso and the others before him, wrecking the ship.Prospero creates a banquet for the back stabbers to feast and takes it away as a punishment for betraying him and putting him through the pain and suffering. For example,” You are three men of sin, whom destiny- That hath to instrument...Most unfit to live.” This quote shows how Prospero lets them know who is running the show now.

He uses Ariel as a way of power to gain their attention, Ariel then speaks out and shows then who's boss.Prospero who simply seeks revenge from the three troublemakers that threaten his life turns their night into one they will never forget. For example, 'I had forgot that foul conspiracy of the beast Caliban and his confederates against my life... [to spirits] Well done!” This shows how Prospero uses his power as way to get revenge and punish those who made his life harder especially those who threaten his life.

The lesson learned in the play is that all good things must come to an end and some may simply learn to forgive. For example, “[aside to Sebastian] No. [To Antonio.] For you, most wicked sir, whom to call brother Would even infect my mouth, I do forgive Thy rankest fault, all of them, and require My dukedom of thee, which perforce I know Thou must restore.” This shows how Prospero forgave everyone who were responsible for exiling of him and his daughter even those who hurt him in other way. Prospero then gets what he wants and retires his powers.
