Relationship On Based Care

As nurses, it is important that we are equally knowledgeable in caring as we are in curing. Implementing the art and the science of nursing into our practice involves making a conscious commitment to relationship-based patient care, exhibiting caring and compassionate behaviors, and using evidence-based practice. To achieve this, nurses are trained to become professionals that are responsible for providing holistic care and personal reassurance to our patients by acknowledging their spiritual, emotional, physical, and mental needs. Nurses do this by centering themselves on their compassion and understanding how thoroughly caring for our patients can positively impact the recovery of illness and their longevity overall.

During a shift where we might find ourselves caught up in a whirlwind of tasks, it’s easy to forget to be present in the moment and transgress to the task-oriented flow of the hospital entity.

“Uncaring nursing encounters result in patient’s feeling devalued and depersonalized, leading to discouragement.” When we pledge to the profession of nursing, we are devoting ourselves to the importance of humanized care, individualized comfort measures, advocating for our patients, and being the first-hand of emotional, social, physical, and spiritual support to our patients.

“Nurses must strive to minimize the patient’s feeling of guilt and suffering, and to make use of their tools.”

Often, patients feel some degree of compromised dignity and vulnerability while in the hospital knowing their health is in the hands of other people. Not only do we have the opportunity to develop a close connection with our patients, but we are also able to create a closer therapeutic bond with family members who might also be in need of support.

It is important to take a moment out of our day to make family members feel as though they can trust the medical professionals who are in charge of the care of their loved one. In addition to succumbing to physical illness, patients may encounter a temporary existential change in self-identity as they navigate the path of recovery.

By becoming attuned to the patient’s individual needs and values, we can provide a guilt-free environment and reduce any feeling of insecurity that our patients might be experiencing. Nursing is widely considered an art and a science, wherein caring forms the theoretical framework of nursing. Nursing and caring are grounded in a relational understanding, unity, and connection between the professional nursing and the patient. Task-oriented approaches challenge nurses in keeping the care in nursing.  The art of caring for our patients is best defined as an interpersonal practice by the professional nurse in order to better achieve holistic health outcomes. Within the nurse-patient relationship, communication occurs through active listening, empathy, and attentiveness.

The art of caring is mutually beneficial and is best practiced by the nurse through cultural acknowledgement, learning and cognitive assessments, developmental level, consideration of present illness and disease. As Jean Watson said, “Caring is not constrained by time, caring can happen in a moment.” In times of chaos, we need to remember the importance of genuine care and compassion for the lives we are responsible for everyday in our nursing careers. We are lucky to have the opportunity to touch the lives of others and to work in a profession that allows us to make a difference in the world. Fluently practicing relationship-based care allows us to appreciate the dynamics our international community and cultural differences throughout the patient population.
