In Khaled Hosseini's novel "The Kite Runner," Amir does not help Hassan in the alley because he is paralyzed by his fear and guilt. Earlier in the novel, Amir had betrayed Hassan by failing to intervene when Hassan was raped. This incident had caused a rift in their friendship and had left Amir feeling ashamed and unworthy of Hassan's loyalty. When Amir witnesses Hassan being assaulted in the alley, he is reminded of his own cowardice and inability to stand up for Hassan in the past. The weight of his guilt and shame overwhelm him, and he chooses to run away rather than confront the assailants and defend his friend.
