In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Captain Walton ultimately decides to turn his ship around and abandon his mission to the North Pole due to a number of factors that he considers as paramount to the safety and well-being of his crew. First and foremost, Walton's decision is influenced by the condition of his crew. Since embarking on his journey, several of his sailors have fallen ill, and their conditions are rapidly deteriorating due to the harsh climate and grueling conditions of the expedition.
