Thomas Paine wrote "Common Sense" in order to advocate for independence from British rule, to mobilize support for the American Revolutionary War, and to lay the groundwork for the formation of a new nation with a democratic government. Paine was an English immigrant to the American colonies who had witnessed firsthand the injustices and inequalities of British rule. He believed that the American people deserved independence and the opportunity to govern themselves. In "Common Sense," Paine presented arguments that resonated with the American people and influenced public opinion regarding the need for independence. One of the main reasons Paine wrote "Common Sense" was to justify and rally support for the war against the British.
