Ariel is a fictional character in William Shakespeare's play "The Tempest". He is a spirit who serves Prospero, the play's protagonist and rightful Duke of Milan. Ariel's reasons for working for Prospero can be traced to his original imprisonment by the witch Sycorax, who had been exiled to the island before Prospero arrived. Sycorax had imprisoned Ariel in a tree, where the spirit remained for twelve years until Prospero arrived and freed him by using his magical powers. After his release, Ariel became indebted to Prospero and agreed to serve him as a loyal servant. This service included helping Prospero with tasks such as using magic to create storms and manipulating the actions of the play's human characters.
