In the play "The Tempest," written by William Shakespeare, Prospero and Miranda are aided in their escape from their former home on the island by a number of individuals. Chief among these is Ariel, a spirit who serves as Prospero's servant and is responsible for carrying out many of his spells and commands.In the early parts of the play, Ariel is freed from the bondage of the witch Sycorax, who had previously imprisoned him. In exchange for his freedom, Ariel agrees to serve Prospero for a period of time, carrying out his orders and helping him to achieve his objectives. As Prospero begins to enact his plans to escape from the island, Ariel plays a crucial role in these efforts.
