In The Great Gatsby, Nick Carraway is the narrator and the character through whom the reader experiences the events of the story. Although Nick is often portrayed as a detached and impartial observer, there are several passages in the novel that suggest he is not fully content with his life. One example is the following excerpt from Chapter 1: "I felt a haunting loneliness sometimes, and felt it in others too—poor young clerks who loitered in front of windows waiting until it was time for a solitary restaurant dinner—young clerks in the dusk, wasting the most poignant moments of night and life."
