The novel is considered one of the earliest science fiction works and has had a substantial impact on the literary world, as well as popular culture.Mary Shelley began writing Frankenstein when she was only eighteen years old, during the summer of 1816. At the time, she and her future husband, the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, along with Lord Byron and John William Polidori, were vacationing near Lake Geneva in Switzerland. This retreat was famously known as the "Year without a Summer" due to the eruption of Mount Tambora in Indonesia, which caused global climatic abnormalities.
