Uncle Tom's Cabin is a novel written by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, it depicted the harsh life for African Americans under slavery. The book reached millions of readers and became influential in the United States and Great Britain, energizing anti-slavery forces in the American North, while provoking widespread anger in the South. In fact, Uncle Tom's Cabin was so influential that it was credited with hastening the Civil War.
The story centers on Uncle Tom, a long-suffering black slave. Uncle Tom becomes "the Christ of all true lovers," dying for his love of Jesus Christ and returning him to heaven as a free man at last when he dies from being beaten to death by angry slave traders.
Though Stowe intended her novel to be an indictment against slavery, some characters are more sympathetic than others—particularly Little Eva, who dies young; George Harris and Eliza Harris (who escape north with their child); and Mr. Shelby (who frees his slaves).
