Les Misérables is a French novel by Victor Hugo, published in 1862. It includes themes of social injustice and the redemption of the human soul. The story is set in Parisian society shortly before the French Revolution.
The main character, Jean Valjean, is an ex-convict who escapes from prison after 19 years of unjust imprisonment. He is confronted with many challenges as he tries to establish a new life for himself and his adopted daughter Cosette.
The theme of redemption dominates the novel. There are many other characters who face difficult situations and must overcome their personal failings to achieve some measure of happiness or redemption.
