When Does Les Mis Take Place?

The musical Les Misérables takes place in Paris during the early 19th century.

The story follows Jean Valjean, who is released from prison after serving nineteen years for stealing a loaf of bread, and Fantine, an unmarried mother who sells her hair to pay for her daughter Cosette's care. The two are separated by fate and reunited through the efforts of a young student named Marius Pontmercy, who falls in love with Cosette.
