The Trobrianders of Papua New Guinea is an ethnographic study of the Trobriand people, conducted by Annette Weiner. The Trobriand people are a matrilineal society, meaning that descent and inheritance are traced through the female line. The book focuses on the role of women in Trobriand society, and how they are able to exercise a great deal of power and authority, despite the fact that they are not the official leaders of the community. The book begins with a description of the physical setting of the Trobriand Islands, and then goes on to describe the social structure of Trobriand society. It is divided into four sections: The Household”, “The Clan”, “The Tribe”, and “The Village”. The Household section looks at the role of women in the home, and how they are responsible for the care and upbringing of children. The Clan section looks at the role of clans in Trobriand society, and how they provide a sense of identity and belonging for members of the community. The Tribe section looks at the role of the tribe in Trobriand society, and how it provides a sense of unity and purpose for the community. The Village section looks at the role of the village in Trobriand society, and how it provides a sense of community for the people who live there. The book concludes with a discussion of the role of magic and religion in Trobriand society. Magic is seen as a way of controlling the natural world, and religion is seen as a way of controlling the spiritual world.”
