Piper Kerman’s memoir, Orange Is the New Black, chronicles her year in prison. Kerman was sentenced to fifteen months in prison for a ten-year-old drug offense. She was initially incarcerated at a federal prison camp in Danbury, Connecticut, before being transferred to a low-security prison in Brooklyn.
Kerman quickly learns the ropes of prison life, making friends with both inmates and guards. She also finds love with her prison girlfriend, Alex. However, Kerman’s idyllic life is upended when Alex is transferred to another prison.
Kerman eventually adjusts to prison life and is released early for good behavior. She must then readjust to life on the outside, where she is faced with the realities of her criminal record.
Despite the challenges, Kerman is ultimately able to rebuild her life and find happiness. Her experience in prison also leads her to become an advocate for criminal justice reform.
