Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-French graphic novelist, known for her graphic novels Persepolis and Chicken with Plums.Satrapi was born in Rasht, Iran, in 1969. Her parents were politically active and she was raised in a progressive environment.
She attended the Lycée Français d’Iran in Tehran.In 1984, at the age of 14, she was sent to Vienna, Austria, by her parents to escape the Iran-Iraq War. She returned to Iran after the war ended, but left again in 1990 to study at the School of Decorative Arts in Strasbourg, France.Satrapi’s graphic novels Persepolis (2000) and Chicken with Plums (2004) are based on her own life and have been translated into many languages. Her work has been praised for its honest portrayal of growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution.
Satrapi has also directed two films based on her graphic novels: Persepolis (2007) and Chicken with Plums (2011).In 2015, Satrapi was named a Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur by the French government.
