In the book, Mark Twain describes his childhood and young adulthood in a series of stories set along the Mississippi River. He tells of his adventures as a riverboat pilot, including his experience as a slave trader, and of his time in New Orleans, where he worked as a typesetter and a newspaper reporter. He also recounts his journey up the river to the Minnesota Territory, where he met and married his wife, Olivia.
