John Knowles is an American author, best known for his novel A Separate Peace. Knowles was born in 1926 in Fairmont, West Virginia, and was raised in a small town in the Appalachian Mountains. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy, where he wrote for the school newspaper and was active in theatre. After graduation, Knowles enlisted in the Army Air Forces, and served as a navigator during World War II. He attended Yale University on the G.I. Bill, and graduated in 1949.
Knowles’s first novel, A Separate Peace, was published in 1959. The novel is set at a New England boarding school during World War II, and is based on Knowles’s own experiences at Phillips Exeter. The novel was a critical and commercial success, and has been translated into more than 20 languages.
Knowles’s other novels include The Paragon (1963), The Third Day (1965), and The Passion of Colette (1969). He has also written a number of short stories, and his work has been anthologized in several collections. Knowles has taught at a number of colleges and universities, including the University of North Carolina and Boston University. He currently lives in Florida.
