John Hersey was one of the most prolific and well-respected American authors of the 20th century. He was born in Tientsin, China in 1914, the son of missionaries, and spent his childhood in Asia. He was educated at Yale University and the University of Michigan, and he began his career as a journalist in the 1930s. Hersey’s first novel, A Bell for Adano, was published in 1944 and won the Pulitzer Prize. He went on to write more than 20 novels, non-fiction books, and plays, and his work was translated into more than 40 languages. Hersey was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Institute of Arts and Letters, and he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1993. He died in 1997 at the age of 84.
John Hersey’s writing is powerful and moving. He has a way of bringing his characters and their stories to life in a way that is both captivating and insightful. Hersey’s ability to evoke emotion in his readers is undeniable, and his stories are always worth reading.
