Jack Davis was an Australian artist, who is best known for his paintings of Aboriginal Australians. He was born in Perth, Western Australia, in 1917, and grew up in the small town of Collie. Davis began painting at a young age, and was self-taught. He first gained recognition for his work in the 1930s, when he exhibited his paintings in the Perth Arts Centre. Davis’ paintings are characterized by their use of bright colors and bold lines.In the 1940s, Davis began to experiment with different styles of painting, and began to develop his own unique style. He became known for his paintings of Aboriginal Australians, which often depicted them in traditional dress and ceremonies. Davis’ paintings were a celebration of Aboriginal culture, and helped to raise awareness of the plight of Aboriginal people in Australia.Davis’ paintings are held in many public and private collections in Australia and overseas. He was awarded the Order of Australia in 1984, and was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2001.
