Ishmael Beah was born in Sierra Leone in 1980. He grew up in a small village in the country’s rural southeast. When he was twelve years old, he was forced to flee his home when rebel forces attacked his village. He spent the next three years as a child soldier, fighting in Sierra Leone’s civil war.In 1996, Beah was rescued by UNICEF workers and sent to a rehabilitation center in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. He eventually moved to the United States, where he attended college and became an advocate for child soldiers. In 2007, he published his memoir, A Long Way Gone, which tells the story of his experiences as a child soldier.Beah’s story is one of hope and resilience. Despite the horrors he experienced during the war, he has been able to rebuild his life and find success. He is an inspiration to others who have faced difficult circumstances.
