Irene Gut Opdyke was a Polish-American nurse and humanitarian who risked her life to save the lives of Jewish refugees during the Holocaust. She was born in Kraków, Poland, in 1922, and her family moved to the United States when she was a child. She returned to Poland to study nursing, and during World War II she was working as a nurse in a German military hospital in Warsaw when she was ordered to help transport Jewish patients to a concentration camp. Instead, she hid them in the hospital and helped them escape. She was caught and imprisoned, but she managed to survive and later testified at the Nuremberg trials. After the war, she returned to the United States and worked as a nurse until her retirement. She died in 2003.
Irene Gut Opdyke’s story is one of courage and determination in the face of incredible odds. She risked her own life to save the lives of others, and her selfless act is an inspiration to us all.
