Greg Mortenson is an American humanitarian, mountaineer, and author. He is best known for his work in Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he has built over 170 schools.Mortenson was born in Minnesota in 1957. He began climbing mountains as a young man and soon developed a passion for the sport. In 1993, he attempted to climb K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. After failing to reach the summit, he became lost and separated from his team. He wandered into a remote village in Pakistan, where he was nursed back to health by the villagers.Mortenson was so moved by the kindness of the villagers that he vowed to build a school in their village. He returned to the United States and began raising money for the project. To date, he has built over 170 schools in Pakistan and Afghanistan. He has also written several books about his experiences, including Three Cups of Tea and Stones into Schools.
