Chaim Potok was born in the Bronx, New York, in 1929 to Polish immigrant parents. He was educated in Jewish day schools and received a degree in English literature from Yeshiva University. After serving in the Korean War, he was ordained as a rabbi and earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Pennsylvania.
Potok’s first novel, The Chosen (1967), was an instant bestseller and established him as one of the most important American Jewish writers of his generation. His other novels include My Name is Asher Lev (1972), The Promise (1969), and In the Beginning (1975).
Potok’s novels are known for their exploration of the conflicts between religious faith and secular values, and between the individual and the community. They are also notable for their sympathetic portrayal of the Hasidic way of life.
Potok died in 2002.
