Interracial Marriages in the United States

There is a low percentage of interracial marriages in the United States. Interracial marriage is rare among white and black Americans. In the United States, the larger the group or race, the more likely that the members will find a marriageable partner of their race. In the article, Qian states that the largest race in the United States is white. 70% of the U.S population from the 2000 U.S. Census was classified as white, and only 4% of married whites, aged between 20 and 34, had nonwhite spouses.

Interracial marriage rates are much higher for American-born racial minorities. According to Qian, interracial marriages for American-born racial minorities include 9% for African Americans, 39 percent for Hispanic Americans, 56 percent for American Indians, and 59% for Asian Americans. According to Qian's research about interracial marriages, lighter the skin color, the higher rate of intermarriage with white Americans.

A difference that Gian states in his article between rates of interracial dating and interracial marriage include that more Americans had an interracial relationship instead of interracial marriage.

While there were 9% of African Americans, 39% of Hispanic Americans, and 59% of Asian Americans that were in an interracial marriage in the same age range as the survey was done for interracial dating.

In Gian's article, he states that 'College-educated men and women are more likely to marry interracially than those with less education.'. He also states that six out of ten African Americans who marry whites with different education levels, they will marry whites that are less educated than them. So, if the U.S. Census Bureau is right about 90% of the future U.S. population growth will be from minority communities, then there will be more interracial marriages that have different levels of education.
