India: Culture, Heritage And Values

We all love our parents. This is a love that we have for them in childhood itself but many of us don't have capability to understand why do we love them at that stage. As we grow, we understand of hardships our parents undergo in order to take care of us. This creates more amount of love towards our parents. What I meant to say is in a similar way we start taking pride in our country because of the seeds of prejudice planted in us.

Like for example, most of us used to sing national anthem or national song in our school days without knowing complete meaning of it. As we accept it in childhood without questioning its meaning, we don't try to seek the reason for it again when we become adults (just like our calculus class now). So we all will be carrying that kind of love in us from childhood till now. But the more we learn about our country, we feel more proud of it.

So apart from the prejudiced love i have for India, I want to mention why I love India and why I am proud to be an Indian.

Indian culture and heritage

I am really proud of Indian culture. Vedic science that originated in India was really advanced. But we treated our Vedic science as religious practices and taking advantage of it, we were exploited by many other countries. One can understand the power of Vedic mathematics by appreciating the fact that how Shakuntala Devi, was able to calculate multiplication between two 13 digited numbers in just 28 seconds! There were many other great scientists and doctors such as Aryabhatta, Susrutha who contributed their work not only to India but also to the whole world.

Great preachers like RamaKrishna Paramahamsa and Swami Vivekananda taught the world about true meaning of life.The concept of yoga and meditation which has now got great importance in whole world was originated in India. Many foreigners are interested in learning about our culture and heritage as we can see them in famous heritage sites such as Taj Mahal, Hampi and even temples!

Unity in Diversity

India is one of the most populated country, Hence there are people from various regions, religions and cults. In spite of such a vast diversity, we all are connected together through the feeling of 'We are Indians'. We can observe this in people of any domain. For example, taking our student community into consideration, there are students of various regions and religions. But there is no feeling of discrimination in us. We never even think of such things in friendship. You can even observe it in other domains such as unity in people of army, unity in cricket team, unity in members of an organization. We usually don't find people dividing into groups based on religions or regions. We all boast of our country but not of our religion or region. Every person is free to practice any religion. A Hindu may learn about Buddhism, Christian about Koran and Muslim about Gita etc., The concept of 'exchange of cultures' must have started here.

Values and nature of Indians

People of India generally don't run after wealth like many other countries. We here understand that wealth has minute effect on happiness of a person. We try to develop good relations with our friends and family. We understand that these relations are ultimate source of happiness for us. We may sometimes use rude or obscene language among our friends, but not because of any hatred or grudge towards them. We Indians are mostly self satisfied especially those living in villages as compared to people of other countries. We are pleasant and pious by nature, This can be understood by the facts- how chess was invented in India which has become an alternative for war in many places, how Indians fought Britishers using Ahimsa and Satyagraha. Even after huge economic loss after independence people of India displayed high optimism and helped building a great nation. Many westerners are hence looking towards India to find inner peace in themselves and to develop good personality. My understanding is "Qualities of knowledge and ideas build a nation. Qualities of leadership, responsibility and kindness sustain the nation from falling, and qualities which aim at building relationships with fellow people strengthen a nation" India having people of these qualities in good amount has therefore managed to become a great nation.
