Important Fire Extinguishers

A survey was given to a group of 43 students on the Instagram @josephmlong1 and the results of the survey were somewhat shocking. Out of 43 students 84% voted YES for fire extinguishers and 16% voted NO. No data was gathered as to why these students voted no but, from basic observation and deductive reasoning, it was gathered that these students are uneducated fire extinguishers. For the 16% of students that obviously don't know about fire extinguishers, I will provide all the information needed to become a expert extinguisher.

There's a few things someone needs to know before becoming an expert extinguisher; the first is knowing the different types of fire extinguishers, the second is knowing how they are made, what's inside, and even how to make your own, the third and most important is knowing how to utilize a fire extinguisher.

First of all, there are five main types of fire extinguishers; A, B, C, D, and K. Each type of extinguisher is used for different things.

Type A is often found in homes and businesses and is used for ordinary materials like, clothes, wool, and paper (“Choosing and Using..” ). Type B is also found in homes but is used for combustible and flammable liquids like grease, gasoline, oil and oil-based paints. Type C is used for electrical equipment like tools, appliances, and other things that plug into an outlet; these are also found in homes and businesses. The second qualification to become an expert extinguisher is know how extinguishers are made, what's inside, and how to make them. The purpose of fire extinguishers are to remove one or more aspect of a fire. There are three aspects of fires; fuel, heat, and oxygen (“Fire Extinguisher”). Fire extinguishers expel an agent from the extinguisher using pressure. Generally, the agents applied are water, chemical foam, dry powder, halon, or carbon dioxide (“Fire Extinguisher”). Fire extinguishers are generally made in factories that use a process to make them. That process is, create the tank or cylinder, pressurize the tank, load the agent, machine the valve, and add the hardware. It is also important to know how to make one at home is case there is not one around you. To do this all you need is a jar or any type of bottle that can have a tight lid and poke a hole in the lid. Then, you need to fill the jar half way with vinegar. To activate the fire extinguisher drop in a spoonful of baking soda and shake vigorously pointing it at the fire (Helmenstine). To make sure that the fire dwill go out make sure that you know how to use a fire extinguisher the right way.

Finally, and most importantly, to become an expert extinguisher you must know how to utilize a fire extinguisher correctly. For this all you need to remember is the word PASS (“Fire Extinguisher Use”). This is an acronym to help people remember how to use a fire extinguisher. The P is for pull the pin, A for aim, S for squeeze, and the second S is for sweep at the bottom of the fire. Knowing this is the most important part in become an expert extinguisher because even if you have a fire extinguisher but don't know how to use it, it is pointless.

If you have read this and understand the difference between different fire extinguishers, how they are made and how to make your own, and how to use them you can consider yourself an expert extinguisher. I now implore you and your expert status to go out and teach the world your knowledge about fire extinguisher to decrease the number of people that vote no for fire extinguishers!
